In the Spring of 2011 I was invited to go on a cruise to the Caribbean on Princess Cruise Lines. As always, I saw this as an opportunity to make pictures. The environment I encountered on the Crown Princess is in many ways artificial and man-made. The ports of call included, the Cayman Islands, Rowaton, Honduras, The Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico. I encountered the shopping “ports” that are built and maintained by the cruise lines themselves and very little of the indigenous culture or architecture. I thought that interesting photographs could be made that explored the tension between the artificiality of the cruise ship environment and cruise line operated “ports” and the very real people who take these cruises.
